Sissala East Municipal: Philanthropist Nears the Promise of Setting up 5 Community Libraries in Deprived Communities

A partnership project between a well renowned philanthropist and 5 communities to setting up community libraries in the Sissala East municipal of the Upper West Region of Ghana is nearing completion as Mr.Kingsley Mahama Kanton takes delivery of books in Tumu and from friends in abroad. Though partnership, a chunk part of the efforts comes from the philanthropist.

Mr.Kingsley Mahama Kanton known as a philanthropist, a onetime parliamentary candidate on the ticket of Peoples National Convention party (PNC) and also a lawyer in the making has for the past years contributed immensely to the development of the Municipality and other district in the Region both as an individual and part of an organization since his dream and that of few others gave birth to a non-governmental organization called Save-Ghana which keeps giving back to society in diverse ways and for many years now.

Information from all quarters of Education in Ghana and in the Sissala Municipality points out to inability to read as a fundamental cause of poor performance among school pupils. It is against this backdrop that, Mr.Kingsley Mahama Kanton initiated a mechanism of inculcating reading habits among rural school pupils by setting up community libraries in some most deprived communities as they experience woeful availability of text books and reading books.

On 2nd April, 2019 the philanthropist Mr.Kingsley Mahama Kanton Took delivery of over ten thousand books different categories meant for the first five communities namely Kong, Bugubelle, Nabulo , Nmanduano, Nabugubelle all in the Sissala East Municipality. Some of the categories of books among the received ones include: books for math, science, English, English literature, physical education, adult non-fiction, fiction, leisure, law, health and school supplies such as TLMs, markers, school bags, calculators, masking tapes, and so forth.

As  part of showing commitment, judicious use of items and a sense of ownership to this project by the community people, a partnership of putting up structures by the various beneficiaries communities has been agreed on and based on this arrangement almost four communities are ready leaving one community to complete their structure.

In addition to stocking these community libraries, he promised to introduce spelling bee competition among schools especially beneficiary ones in the whole of the Municipality with support from stakeholders especially Sissala East Education Service. This move he said, will provoke both pupils and teachers to want to outperform each other not only in the competition but overall performance.

A date is yet to be set for the official donation of items to the various beneficiary communities when all structures are completed and duly communicated. According to him, this gesture when done, would give a sigh of relieve to skeptics as they took it as the usual promise and fail.
