Sissala East District: The Sorry State of Our Library

According Wikipedia’ ’A library is a collection of sources of information and similar resources, made accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing. It provides physical or digital access to material, and may be a physical building or room, or a virtual space, or both’’.

Yes indeed, we have a physical building supposedly meant as custody for sources of information and similar resources should be made accessible to the people especially knowledge seekers in the District.  The Sissala East District library was commissioned on the 14th of July 1998 by her excellency Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, who was the first lady and also the president of the then 31st December Women’s Movement. Since the inception of the library, knowledge seekers mostly students thronged the facility to read, research and borrow books for use at their leisure time.

As years pass by, the state of the facility deteriorates as building deface, books not replaced, no functional toilet facility, no running water, broken down shelves leaving the facility in a state of ghost house. These challenges made the facility unattractive to patrons though students pending for examinations do resort to the facility as they have no option.

Organizations such as Save-Ghana, Actionaid Ghana and others have made significant efforts to revive the library and inculcate reading habit into our teeming youth, all these efforts have yielded little results.

Since the coming into being of the facility, which is the biggest and second to the regional library, the District Assembly has not made any significant contribution to keep the facility running. The worst of it was when, the District libraries were by law, handed over to the various MMDA’s to run except, the regional ones which are under the care of the Ghana National Library Authority and thus ,the secrete to the attractive and functional looks of the various regional libraries.

The academic performance especially among the BECE AND WASSCE In the Sissala East District is nothing to talk home about Undoubtedly, the poor reading habit among the school children has being a big contributory factor to their poor performance.

This library though out of the dumsor era, has survived without lights for years for some time now,all due to indebtness to the VRA. As if not enough, after defraying part of the debt cannot buy units to power the facility. By the kind courtesy of GIFEX the facility has a fully installed internet facility but non-functional as there is no lights.

Sissala East District can boost of professors, PHD, Master’s degree, degree, HND, Diploma, certificate holders in the educational ladder and yet none of these listed categories of people could come together or as individual help give a face lift to this library or advocate for reading habit among our youth.

Now, the District Assembly, Sissala Youth Forum, traditional council and Sissala Union all do organize forums to dine and wine and pretend to finding solutions to the poor performance among our school children but have never gone to inspect the state of the library, have never donated books to the library, have never put a paint on the walls of the library. The most annoying and disappointing is those mentioned who take booty of the rosewood felling and yet could never help to resuscitate our library but pretend to be concerned about the youth.

We are gradually losing our teeming youth to drugs and if care is not taken, will be breeding thieves and prostitutes soon than later. Our youth instead of spending their leisure time reading whether they have exams to write or not rather indulge in the abuse of drugs (wee, tramadol etc)

Allah richly bless our two hard working Liberians who have single handedly managed with sorry state of the facility till now. School children now a days have stated patronizing the facility  because old books have be conveyed from the regional library to our library because they were needed again as the new regional library has new stock. What a pity for Sissala East District!

Parents now buy mobile phones as gifts to their children and not called wealthy men and women of the land drive in luxurious cars every December for praise showering from the youth and would not carry a single book for the library. What A Shame to them! Professors flaunt facebook with their philosophical sayings and cannot donate a single book they have published to their District library.  What a Shame!

The library needs the following: new books, new shelves, table and chairs, computers, electricity to power the internet, running water and toilet facility, and painting.

We are therefore calling on individuals, organizations and corporate bodies, philanthropies to come to our aid and help resuscitate our only library. The youth are ready to read and stop abusing drugs.
