An irate youth comprising Sissala Union and Sissala Youth Forum today, 18th February, 2020 stormed the Municipal Forestry office over an alleged action and inaction of the officers suspected to be the results of the creation of fertile grounds for the resurgence of the harvesting of rosewood in the area.
The Sissala East Municipal is one among the hardest hit in the Upper West Region by the nefarious activities of illegal loggers amidst numerous protests and resistance by well-meaning people within and beyond.
News of resurgence of rosewood harvesting was greeted with angered by the people of the Sissala East Municipal and has triggered the call for an emergency meeting by the Sissala Youth Forum to discuss ways of stopping the resurgence. Participants at an emergency meeting to discuss the resurgence of rosewood harvesting got angered at the absence of any representative of the Municipal Forestry office after serving them an official noticeand following up with a phone call by the Sissala Youth Forum Mr Yussif Napuna. To the Youth, More annoyingly was the location of the office from where the meeting was held, which is just a stone throw.
The action of the youth did not end in the meeting but was hastened by the need to storm the forestry office and register their displeasure.
The irate youth going by their words, and also to show how poised they are to stop the ugly resurgence of the rosewood harvesting in the area, stormed the Sissala Municipal forestry office, nailed the office with wood.
Key amongst the concerns of the irate youth storming the forestry office is to call for the transfer of some Municipal forestry officers who are either seen as masterminds of the resurgence of the rosewood harvesting in the area.
Among the forestry officers they irate youth are calling for their transfer includes but not limited the following: Municipal Director Mr Jasper, The deputy Manager Mr.Gordiuos, Mr.Gariba, Mr.Waaza ,Mr.Evans and one Mr Appeah Apuuri. These persons are alleged to either be in bed with the illegal loggers or owned chain saw machines use in rosewood logging.
Somewhere last year in March 2019, the Minister of lands and natural resources Mr.Kwaku Asomah Cheremeh working on behalf of government placed a ban on the harvesting, transportation and exportation of rosewood. The ban by the government comes after a wide spread condemnation by civil society organizations, activists, and all categories of Environmentalists as well as concerned residents in affected areas.
