The Chiefs and people of the Gandawii Clan comprising 6 communities have made a strong call to the government to up-grade Sorbelle CHPS compound to a health center since that is the centre of their enclave and by large would serve as a nearest referral centre. They bemoaned the deplorable nature of their roads leading to the District capital has a hindrance to accessing health care especially emergency cases.
This message in a welcome address was, among a number of appeals made during this year’s celebration of the Gandawii Naabahilime festival. The event was held in Sorbelle Communiy in the Sissala West District of Upper West Region on 30th March 2019.
This year’s theme was on ’Celebration Ten Years of the Gandawii Unity and Cultural Revival’.The Chief of Kandia one of the Gandawii communities, in the person of Kuoro Bamula Basinjia Chieminah III intimated an upsurge in their growth, determination and unity from a humble beginning since 2010 till date. He espoused the purpose of the festival as part of efforts to preserve and promote the positive values of the Gandawii people for both current and future generations.
According to Kandia Kuoro, an initial request to the District Health Service to up-grade the CHPS to a health centre was paid heed to but unfortunately struggling to receive its full complement of staff to operate at full capacity due largely to inadequate accommodation for staff of the health centre. He made it known that, through the efforts of the Gandawii people, four rooms have been constructed up to the roofing level and it is against this backdrop that, they are appealing to government to help complete the rooms and hence accommodating staff.
The Gandawii communities all located in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region include Pulima,Sillebelle,sorbelle,Kupulime,Gbarima Jitong and Sorbelle. The Chief of Kandia in his welcome address revealed that, since the birth of this festival the Gandawii enclave has witnessed tremendous revival in the culture of the people. Various songs, dances, and other health cultural practices that were getting eroded have all been revived since the initiation of the festival.
The event was graced by the Deputy Upper West Regional Minister Hon.Amidu Chinnia Issahaku who is also a Sissala by tribe. Prominent among those present include,Paramount Chief of Tumu and also a member of council of elders Kuoro Richard Babini Kanton VI,Chief of Kong Kuoro Savei,The Paramount Chief of Zini, Sissala union president Proff Roger Kanton,MCE for Sissala East Municipal Hon.Karim Nanyua, and many more.
There was a spectacular display of cultural drumming and Dancing from various Gandawii communities. Another rare display was, the use human mouth and teeth to clip a six inches block for a short distance which brought a lot of amusement and applauds. The event also witnessed an educative and insightful drama display on the menace of illegal recruitment agencies recruiting teenage girls to the Gulf States and Middle East countries.
